It is often confined in shoes for many hours each day, exposed to sweat, friction, and changing temperatures, and is the part of the body most likely to be neglected when it comes to moisturizing and inspection. Dry, cracked skin is one of the most common complaints we see, especially among older adults and patients with diabetes. Severely dry skin can crack, particularly around the heels, creating fissures that are not only painful but can bleed and become infected. Dry skin also makes the feet more vulnerable to other problems and is often a sign of underlying issues such as eczema, fungal infection, or poor hydration. Our treatment begins with identifying any contributing condition and then addressing the dryness with appropriate medical-grade moisturizers, debridement of thickened skin, and education about daily skin care.

Athlete's foot, a fungal infection of the skin, produces itching, redness, scaling, and sometimes blisters or weeping rashes between the toes and on the soles. Despite its name, this infection affects far more than athletes — anyone who wears closed shoes can develop it. We diagnose athlete's foot through clinical examination and, when needed, laboratory testing, and we prescribe topical or oral antifungal medications tailored to the severity and location of the infection.

Other common conditions include contact dermatitis from shoe materials or topical products, eczema, psoriasis, lichen planus, and various forms of dyshidrotic eczema. Each presents differently and responds to different treatments. Some skin lesions on the feet are concerning for skin cancer, including melanoma, which can occur on the soles or under the nails and is often missed because patients rarely check these areas. We evaluate any unusual mole, growth, or color change carefully and refer for biopsy when indicated.

For patients with diabetes or vascular disease, even minor skin problems require prompt attention because they can serve as entry points for serious infections. Cracked heels, athlete's foot between the toes, and dry skin breakdown can all be the starting point for ulcers and cellulitis.

Our treatment approach is individualized and combines medical management with practical guidance on footwear, sock choices, hygiene, and daily skin care. We dispense medical-grade products in our office when appropriate and coordinate with dermatologists for complex or unclear cases.
