Lymphedema is a chronic condition in which the lymphatic system fails to drain fluid properly from the tissues, causing persistent swelling that most often affects the legs and feet. The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and nodes that helps maintain fluid balance and supports immune function, and when it is damaged or congenitally abnormal, fluid accumulates in the affected limb. Lymphedema is classified as primary or secondary. Primary lymphedema is the result of an inherited or congenital abnormality of the lymphatic system and may appear at birth, during adolescence, or later in life. Secondary lymphedema, which is far more common, develops after damage to the lymphatic system from causes such as cancer treatment, radiation therapy, surgery involving lymph nodes, severe infection, trauma, or chronic venous insufficiency. Whatever the cause, untreated lymphedema tends to progress, with the swelling becoming firmer and more difficult to reduce over time.

Common symptoms include swelling that may begin in the toes or foot and gradually involve the entire limb, a feeling of heaviness or tightness, decreased flexibility, recurring skin infections, thickening of the skin, and sometimes pain or aching. The swelling typically does not improve with simple elevation, distinguishing it from other types of leg swelling. Skin changes such as dryness, hardening, and warty growths can develop in advanced cases, and the skin becomes vulnerable to cellulitis and other infections that can require hospitalization.

Compression therapy is the cornerstone, and we provide professional fitting of medical-grade compression garments tailored to each patient's needs. Manual lymphatic drainage and complete decongestive therapy, performed by trained therapists, can dramatically reduce swelling. Meticulous skin care helps prevent breakdown and infection, and we educate patients on cleansing, moisturizing, and inspecting the skin daily. Specialized footwear with adequate room and proper support is essential, since improperly fitting shoes can cause skin injury in vulnerable feet. We also provide prompt treatment of any skin infections, since these can flare quickly in lymphedematous tissue. With consistent care, most patients can substantially improve symptoms and maintain mobility and quality of life.
